As we begin the spring season take a minute to assess where you stand as a leader. I use the term leader not to mean a one and only, but instead a leader among leaders, everyone moving in the same direction towards a goal. I said the word “goal”, but for now let’s all assume our goal is hitting more targets than last year. Remember goals are measureable.
So how do you become a quality leader? Here are a few very typical traits of leaders:
- They build relationships – in this sport you can mentor new comers and younger shooters, you can develop ways to communicate and reassure your team in their endeavor to become confident shooters. You can reach out with your hand and introduce yourself to others and build a relationship with those shooters that are better or more skilled than yourself. This is a great way to learn or be hopeful they return the outreach with a mutual relationship.
- Lead change – this is a tough one because we all know change is disruptive. In the big picture loosing senior shooters means the squad has to pick up the loss. In smaller terms it means whatever you need to change you do so without return to your old habits just because it seems easier.
- Inspire others – You can be a vocal supporter of your team and others efforts. You can be complimentary of their efforts regardless of the number of targets hit. Your willingness to inspire might come from your attitude after missing the 25th target and instead of complaining and being emotional you inspire others by being upbeat, positive and constructive in your approach to getting it done the next time.
- Communicate clearly – As a team, are you all on the same page as to what you want as a team. I say this because some may want a personal gain with little regard for the team. I always hated learning to be a team player when it meant I had to suffer for others mistakes, BUT I soon learned when we accomplished things together it was a lot more fun. Communicate what you want to your team and make sure you are all on the same page.
- Be accountable – Wow, this is a good one. Step up and admit your mistakes. Allow others the same opportunity, but give them time. Make sure the team is supportive so you start by being supportive and be accountable.
These are just a few ways to get your team moving in unison towards common goals, a purpose and measurable outcomes this spring.
